The $800 de minimis exemption is gone. It ended for China and Hong Kong on 2 May 2025, for every country on 29 August 2025, and became permanent US Customs regulation in June 2026. Every commercial shipment now needs formal entry, a 10-digit HTS classification and full duty — whatever its value. Read the full explainer →

The practical consequence is that customs entry and brokerage costs are now largely fixed per shipment rather than per unit. Importing in bulk into a US warehouse and fulfilling domestically pays those costs once instead of on every parcel — which is why holding US stock has stopped being an optimisation and started being the default.

The Post-Brexit Position

There is no US–UK free trade agreement. UK-origin goods enter the United States on standard most-favoured-nation duty rates, the same as most other trading partners. Brexit did not create a preferential lane into the US, and no amount of paperwork will conjure one.

What this means practically: your duty cost is determined by your product's HTS classification, not by where in Europe you ship from. A UK seller and a German seller importing the same product pay the same rate.

Shipping from the UK

MethodTypical transit to US East CoastBest for
Sea freight LCL12–18 days plus handlingPallet volumes; lowest cost
Sea freight FCL10–14 days port to portContainer volumes
Air freight3–5 daysRestocks and higher-value goods
Express courier2–4 daysSamples, first orders

The UK has a genuine geographic advantage over Asian origins here: transatlantic sea freight to the US East Coast is roughly a third of the transit time from China. For a UK brand, sea freight is viable for regular restocking rather than only for initial stock builds.

Why UK Sellers End Up Holding US Stock

Three pressures push the same way:

  • Delivery expectation. A US customer comparing your listing to a domestic one is comparing delivery dates. Transatlantic post cannot compete with two-day domestic ground.
  • Returns. A UK-based seller receiving a US return pays international return freight that frequently exceeds the item's value. With US stock the return comes back domestically and can be resold.
  • Duty efficiency. Since de minimis ended, per-parcel duty and brokerage on every order is a permanent margin drag. Bulk import pays it once.

The Delaware Sales Tax Point

Delaware charges no state sales tax. When inventory is purchased into and shipped from a Delaware warehouse, those inventory purchases are made in a 0% state.

This is separate from import duty — duty is federal and applies wherever your warehouse sits. The Delaware benefit is on the sales tax side. Confirm your own position with a tax advisor, because it depends on your entity structure and registrations.

Getting Started from the UK

  1. Confirm your HTS classification and duty rate with a customs broker before ordering.
  2. Ship a first consignment to our Claymont, Delaware address — sea freight for volume, air for a smaller pilot.
  3. We receive, count, photograph and log within 24 hours, then prep to spec.
  4. Fulfil domestically: FBA replenishment, marketplace orders, or DTC.

Carton and parcel receiving is free, pallet receiving is $25.00 per pallet, and FBA prep runs $0.69–$2.00 per unit by monthly volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a US–UK trade deal that reduces duty?
No. UK-origin goods enter the US on standard most-favoured-nation rates. Your duty depends on HTS classification, not on shipping from the UK rather than elsewhere in Europe.

Can UK sellers still use the $800 de minimis exemption?
No. It ended for all countries on 29 August 2025 and was made permanent regulation in June 2026.

How long does sea freight from the UK to Delaware take?
Roughly 10–14 days port to port for a full container, or 12–18 days for LCL including handling — about a third of the transit from China.

What happens to US returns if I am based in the UK?
International return freight often exceeds the item's value, so many sellers refund without recovery. Holding US stock lets returns come back domestically and be resold.

Does Delaware reduce my import duty?
No. Duty is federal and applies wherever your warehouse is. Delaware's benefit is 0% state sales tax on inventory purchases.
